On September 17th we had our Membership Drive tournament for the North End, and for those who just couldn’t get to the membership drive tournament held by Neal Heggen in Kent the previous weekend. In case you somehow missed the advertising emails, facebook posts, etc that I put out to try and promote the event, the idea was that you’d play this tournament (or Neal’s the previous weekend), and then instead of getting another t-shirt for your closet we’d provide you a one-year membership extension instead.
The Entry Fee was $65, which covered your membership renewal plus one division, and then $5 for a second division. For those of you who wanted to play both tournaments, you could play Neal’s in the south end, and then mine in the North and knock your entry fee down to $15 for the first event and $5 for the second during the North end tournament.
We had a small turnout, so we ran the event on one day so that everyone could drive up and play without having to worry about hotel rooms and getting to and from the tournament.
In Men’s Open, Matthew Porter came in first, defeating Raphael Lopez, Favian Elmore, and Neal Heggen who came in Second, Third, and Fourth respectively. Raphael, Favian, and Neal each won one game, the most exciting of which was the game between Neal and Favian, which was a back and forth battle in game three that Neal ended up winning 11-9.
In Men’s Elite, Charles Coen defeated Rajiv Varadarajan in the final to take First Place in a three game match. Charles won the first game 15-8, lost control of game 2 early on and lost 6-15, and then won decisively 11-1 in the final game of the match. John Pruit beat Neal Heggen 4,5 to take third.
The Men’s A division was a closely contested division between all four entrants. In the end though, Charles Coen took First, Brian Filbert took Second, and Max Gilpin took Third.
In Men’s B’s Viron Elmore took First, followed by David Boyovitch in Second and Mike Van Cleave in Third.
In Men’s C’s Mike Van Cleave took fFrst, followed by Rollie Bailey in Second and Daryl Douglas Jr in Third.
In Men’s 35+, Raphael Lopez took First, Max Gilpin took Second, and Frank Alongi took Third.
In Mixed Up Doubles, Ryan Matthews and Neal Heggen took First, Favian and Viron Elmore took Second, and Brian Gillespie and Pat Lew came in third.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in this event. For those who missed it, we’re hoping to bringing it back next year! Brian Gillespie
